I’m assuming many of you went to one of those great institutions called youth clubs. Designed to keep youths off the street and give them something grown-up(?) to do. If, like me, you have memories of your formative years in one of these places then chances are you’ll remember some of the tunes that were played there. I realise many youth clubs did not play soul related items but I was fortunate in that respect. The two main youth clubs-disco’s where I lived were; • St Mary’s Hall, this was really the in place and where I heard many of early soul sounds, • Comprehensive school discos. The DJ was one of the sports teachers who fancied himself as a top DJ but wasn’t but in fairness he did play a few tunes. I realise naming these clubs will mean nothing to people who did not live near or attend but the music they played would be relative to all. So, looking for soul tracks you heard in your youth club
Starting with this joyous anthem

Around my youth club era Holland-Dozier-Holland were churning brilliant sides for their newly formed Invictus lable. Here are three of the early ones, first two from CotB, the General still sound awesome on the first two
Then there was Freda

Agree with all the above - and it's a long list!
What always hit me was a school disco I used to go to (Robert Sutton in Burton on Trent) where the last track was this - I always thought it was a brilliant record to finish with.

I must admit this is something i had overlooked but like. The concept of last track was not something i was aware of in my youth
Supremes here, why it has a picture of Smokey & Co, i don't understand

From the same album. I must admit Motown stars heavily influenced the musical faire at our clubs

God, you’ve got a good memory. I used to go to various youth clubs but I don’t think I remember many discos. Instead we would go to the Under 14s disco in the next village once a month on a Friday and the over 14s two weeks later every month. I think I was 11 and it was always the same kids, give or take, at both events.
The lads that deejayed were into northern and there’d always be a thirty minute session of that while their mates did their thing on the dancefloor but I wasn’t that interested in the music. I preferred the things we were hearing from Sister Sledge, The Whispers, Teena Marie and so on, that was coming out around then. I’m feeling quite nostalgic, thinking about those times.

Nostagia rules!!! I also liked all the new stuff, but there was something quite exclusive to these tunes. It may be an age thing but going to northern/modern clubs of all sizes, my mates agree on this, felt like part of a club, some form of escapism that all the regular (?) folk did not know about or could care even less.
Go with the nostalgia, it's part of the thing that makes us what we are today

Some of things i recall were from a bygone era but being wet behind the ears they all sounded new to me. Here are some examples from the ladies
Starting with, not my favourite, Betty tune but it is good all the same
Imagine you heard this the first time you today!
& then this, pity it's success, apparently, went to her head

Then there were the guys
Dobie, probably best remembered for this and "Out on the floor" cut many other tunes. "Honey you can't take it back" is my favourite but not played at our youthclub
Another guy who is remembered for this mainly but recored for three gems in the 90's is he still about? Aside a vinyl addict does'nt this make good viewing?
Yes they were white, but i did not know this then. Also Cry like about was played
Hope this stir some memories in the older members of the forum (or is that everyone?)
