I’m assuming many of you went to one of those great institutions called youth clubs. Designed to keep youths off the street and give them something grown-up(?) to do. If, like me, you have memories of your formative years in one of these places then chances are you’ll remember some of the tunes that were played there. I realise many youth clubs did not play soul related items but I was fortunate in that respect. The two main youth clubs-disco’s where I lived were; • St Mary’s Hall, this was really the in place and where I heard many of early soul sounds, • Comprehensive school discos. The DJ was one of the sports teachers who fancied himself as a top DJ but wasn’t but in fairness he did play a few tunes. I realise naming these clubs will mean nothing to people who did not live near or attend but the music they played would be relative to all. So, looking for soul tracks you heard in your youth club
Starting with this joyous anthem
I was 13 when i went to my first youth club which was at the Holy Trinity Church in Wallington SM6. It had a Dance-hall and one Record Player... Remembered music, Isley Brothers - This Old Heart Of Mine / Judy Street - What / Mr Bloe - Grooving with Mr Blow / Soft Cell- Tainted Love / Patrice Rushen Forget Me Not's and this which i still love.

In the 70s it was all Northern Soul where I lived. It was my thing and I started going to Wigan Casino when I was 14. That aside....
The disco's used to generally play chart stuff and would have specific slots for the various 'tribes' Northern Soul / heavy rock / punk / Roxy & Bowie etc. And then some slowies at the end for a smooch. 🤣
One record that takes me back was essentially a disco record, but adopted by the Northern bunch as its a good dancer. Filled the floor every week.....
