There’s a lot of this kind of thing getting played in our house. What are your favourites?

The Too Slow to Disco series is worth collecting if you're into this style of music, and I can particularly recommend the volume of Brazilian music compiled by Ed Motta:
There is a new volume soon to be released, "Yacht Soul", featuring soul stars performing covers of AOR classics:

And I owe Shaun Louis big time for being introduced to this absolute gem by Heat from the self-titled 1980 album:

I've heard Paul Clifford's SoulGuru shows playing Yacht Soul.
I just thought... They used to call it 2-Step.
Is there a (subtle) difference?

I’m not really sure why they’ve started calling it yacht soul, it’s still the same music. Try this for a wonderful example of how to DJ. Paul Nice - Sail on the Grill

AOR, yacht rock, west coast ... many of the people performing in this area were also performing sessions in soul recordings, and vice versa. The talent that appears on Steely Dan's "Aja" album alone is amazing - Joe Sample, Jay Graydon, Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, Michael McDonald, Tom Scott, Lee Ritenour, Clydie King ...
No surprise if the musicians were swapping and developing ideas amongst themselves. And the record companies seemed to be much more generous back then, maybe because US (west coast) radio stations ran (or strolled?) with this popular format.
Someone else who emerged out of all this and who also worked with a who's who of soul and jazz musicians is Michael Franks:

I was never familiar with him but Paul steered me in his direction a few years ago. I love this…

Sadly, a lot of the branding of radio formats and musical styles in the US comes coded: "rock" = "white", etc. No surprise if it's a bit confusing to be told that all this often soulful and jazz-inflected stuff belongs in the same category as Aerosmith and ZZ Top. So the "yacht soul" rebrand makes perfect sense if only to clarify that a lot of people who like soul music will also enjoy stuff like this:

"Yacht Soul" was "invented" by Paul Clifford to define tracks which are part Yacht and part Soul, where the emphasis is on the smooth arrangements and top musicians, and not on the guitars which are frequent in yacht Rock/AOR/Westcoast.... it's quite subtle... "2-Step" is different imho as these tracks are clearly Soul-derived with a slower beat and a prominent bass in most cases, personally I love this genre ! Tracks like Starvue "Body fusion", Natural Four 'Try love again", Crystal Clear "Stay with me", Josie james "Win your love" spring to mind... Lots of them were played at the Parkers events in Manchester....

Calling it Yacht Rock or anything else remotely similar, almost trumps Smooth Jazz, which is another term i can't stand. Anyway...
