'Since I Left you' - The Avalanches
Love this record. And here's why (note the sample is actually 'Since I met you').
The technique...
The samples...
But the video is also intriguing...
Who died? Is it a dream? Were they already in heaven? Etc
My main take is that you need to take chances when they come along, otherwise you can sit on the sidelines and just watch life pass you by. 👍

My first introduction was on a lucky visit to shady acorns record distribution, over the Isle of Wight. I was buying stock for a record shop. When leaving was given on loan the cdr promo. I copied it and sent it back. That cdr changed many friends of mine musical soundtrack where guessing the samples was also the fun part. Sick of waiting for it to come out, my friend picked me up an Australian copy on holiday, albeit slightly different, missing 2 samples. We'd play it in the shop and people would often ask who it was for almost a year before the LP came out on XL. When that came out we were even more gutted that they stripped more samples out. I even bought the LP and 12"s albeit this release is a journey and flipping it over is not really fitting, but the 12" does have the extra track "everyday" so double bubble on that one. Since I left you is still one of my favorites of theirs and the LP is most definitely one of my desert island Lps that i can never tire of hearing. I compare it to the process of The Beatles Sgt Peppers or Pet Sounds, and it will never be bettered or repeated. Wildflower has a few moments that could be compared similar, but that's another release that will get its props in a different way in years to come. My son who was 4 at the time has grown up with them and could talk for days about the samples involved. The video, i think is open to interpretation and i think being a coal miner is just one of those jobs where a can of Heineken would be enough to brighten up your day, going to work in the dark, working in the dark, and coming home in the dark... A hard monochrome life where we would all wish to be uplifted by some sweet sounds and spiritual maidens. Its a wonderful video. ok i have waffled enough.

Always liked this, is it just me or does the dancing guy remind you of Kenneth Cope the guy who used to be in some of the carry on movies. You need to indulge me... it's the drink

Thanks for the additional info Tee.
It's just a mainstream record that hooked me the first time I heard it and I have loved ever since. I only discovered how it was made etc much later on.
The videos add another level of interest. Always more to them than first meets the eye.
This has one of the few raps I actually like and the brass sections are great. Apparently the kid is the bench bums alter ego..
And then this is just like a weird dream. It may be the most 'earwormish' tune I know! I guarantee if I listen to it now I will wake up in the middle of the night with 'you walk on the subway it moves around' going through my head... 🤣

I will have to watch it again as I usually find my eyes gets drawn to the blonde girl and I ignore the miners...😁
