This has been a very long running program on BBC radio, where celebrities talk about themselves and choose a number of tunes, they would take with them, where they actually stranded on a desert island. Though the general idea is whimsical, it is generally flawed; • If you had the foresight to collect your nominated discs before your impending stranding, you surely had the knowledge of the impending problem, so why would you travel? • Assuming you were lucky enough to have your discs with you, what would you play them on? • Even taking into account todays electronic media, what would you charge them with? • Lastly and more importantly wouldn’t you be looking for water, food, shelter & a means of rescue? Now I have got that off my chest, what would your selection be? Happy to have one, or many selections, even multiple visits (Robinson Crusoe was stranded more than once!) Kicking off this thread one of my first would be Lou Ragland’s record I travel alone. I have never tired of hearing this tune, ever since I first heard it in the mid-seventies. The kids (mine) always called it “Travelling man” and I understand why. But this is a superb slice of soul, strings, horns, vocals, backing vocals, instrumental break and what a break, great sax. Only problem it's just too short
For the very few who have not heard this, see below and oh how I envy you, hearing this for the first time!!

Petered, not exactly the way DID’s is supposed to work, the idea is to select which discs you would take with you were you stranded on a desert island. Having said that I like your idea much better, so I think we should open it to both options and with that in mind here are a selection.
Platters washed ashore, another brilliant wylie/hester composition, and a really under estimated track
Triumphs i'm coming to your rescue, another one with great credits

Saturdays Kids - The Jam - Setting Sons LP greatest non soul lp of all time as a 14 year old from a council estate, with a massive chip on my shoulder this was my go to and still is 45 years later. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out - The Smiths. Chasin A Dream - Tashan - Whole LP Remember To This Day 1986 Walking Into Parrot Records In Southend Buying This And Thinking I Was So Cool i was always into Soul but this sent me over the edge and on a lifetime Journey (Should Have Been Sam's Show Must Go On But Everyone Has That as Their Desert Island Disc and I honestly cant say I brought it at the time I Wasn't Old Enough) To Finish....Twofer Night After Night - David Sea..Again Cool Personified I thought I was The Dogs Doodahs when I got It..Still Shake A Stick To It Even Broke My Ankle Falling Off A Stage Dancing To It... Morbid I know in 2016/17 spent best part of a year in hospital, changed my life completely, not had an alcoholic drink since, I should have died I didnt but felt very close to it many times, but i live to tell the tale, I'm an atheist so don't believe in any higher gods..but i do believe in luck and I had a lot and am very grateful..I have no fear in dying thats for sure , i actually don't think its morbid (I actually see death as a celebration not as mourning if you get me) will happen to all of us, just memories you leave behind, but you will forget because your not here LOL... Go for it my friend..look forward to yours

This is much more difficult than i thought, everytime i think of a track ten others spring to replace it. Set myself a target of this weekend or the desert island won't be big enough to house everything, me and Ms Friday

After much, and I do mean very much, deliberation I have narrowed my selection. What is below is my DID selection at this precise moment, by the time I have finished typing it may/will have changed. I’m sure you all understand. In no particular order and no great hidden gems in there, they are; Firstly; a reflection of my northern roots. I started this thread with Lou Ragland but have to add Nothing Can Compare to you - Velvet Satins Crazy baby - Coasters If there are many more upbeat joyous anthems around that aren’t on the “Happy sounding vibes” thread, please let me know.
Final track I this section has to be Potion of love - Ambers. This is just quality personified, vocals to heartbeat backdrop and all in between Heaven in the afternoon - Lew Kirton, holds special memories for me and I never tire of hearing it This old heart of mine – Isley Brothers has to be there as does;
Love is fire love is ice – Gladys Knight and the Pips. Mark, I understand one of your choices of best female singer, Aretha has made some fine tunes but some not so fine, her screeching often puts me off. Gladys for me is the stand-alone queen of soul. Anyone want to argue?
The Fantastic Fours version “If this world were mine” is stunning as is Sam Dees “Worn out broken heart” ( The unreleased version on the Kent cd does it for me, but both are worthy of inclusion)
Finally; Yvonne Elleman – If I can have you, not soul but what an awesome tune, written by those Gibbs Brothers who wrote you’re Barbara S - Guilty tune I believe. Posting this now before I change my mind Wish more folk would partake, some big EMS names conspicuous by their absense

Thankless task, but I can't resist - most will be everybodys favourites
Bobby Womack - If you think your lonely now
Bobby Hutton - Lend a hand
Marvin Gaye - Mercy Mercy Me
JR Bailey - After Hours
The Dells - The Love we had stays on my Mind - Trentham Gardens anyone?
The Spinners - Love dont Love Nobody
Jerry Butler - Stop stepping on my Dreams
Masqueraders - Thats the same thing - Saturday afternoon at Prestatyn still a standout
some of my desert Island tunes & memories - hope I could salvage my Ipod with em all on but getting a charge on that island would scupper things

Great selection Steve, do you think we could teach the "Fridays" to sing? Bamboo and coconuts, if Kid Creole could spare them, backing where applicable.

I find this kind of thing really difficult but here are some records that had a real impact on my life.
Like Mark, I have to choose Bobby Womack - How Could You Break My Heart. A record that transports me back in time, running for the dance floor every time I heard the opening ring tone.
Another has to be Paris - I Choose You. I remember hearing it for the first time on a tape someone had given me and playing it repeatedly all the way home from London in the middle of the night. I couldn’t get enough of it after that, and still can’t, decades later.
The Impressions, I can’t choose a single song so it will be Young Mods Forgotten Story. I came late to this album but it will always be a desert island disc for me, however long I live.
Love, Peace and Happiness - It Ain’t Nothing But A Love Thang - brings me joy every time I hear it.
Kool and the Gang - Summer Madness- I don’t remember when I first heard this but I do remember thinking my heart would explode each time the notes lifted me a bit higher.
Those are the first that come to mind I’ll have a think about another 5 to add.
