I thought I’d give southern soul a bit of love. On the soul scene, it tends to struggle to be heard above the modern Neo Soul and R&B type sounds these days. Those US southern states have always been a hotbed of soul talent (Shirley Brown, Betty Wright, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin and Johnnie Taylor just to name a few obvious examples) and it continues today with their modern counterparts. So, after I recently started participating on this forum, and finding a fellow southern soul fan here (yes Jack, that’s you!), I thought I’d share some of my favourite southern flavoured artists and songs. Hopefully there might be something of interest and so encourage a few others to share their southern soul favourites, anything from the last 5 decades or so. I thought I'd stay quite recent for starters so this first set of tunes are all from 2022.
First up, The Jous Band, whose music I discovered a few years ago, and a single from last year 'You', mellow and smooth.
Next up, an excellent southern soul stepper from Leroy Allen.
This lady has a great voice, Dee Dee Simon, and this track 'How Does It Feel' was on her self-titled album from 2022. Quality soul.
This from Big J Southern Soul, 'We Got Love'.
You can't go wrong with some Willie Clayton, again from 2022 and 'Oh, What A Night'.

Here are a few more tunes from 2022, just showing how southern soul is still alive and well these days.
Here's Johnny Rawls with a beautiful tender ballad.
Next up, Jarvis Greene with a great late night ballad, 'Late Night With You'.
More mellow sweetness and a lovely mid-tempo groove, from Melani's 'From My Soul' album (2022). 'Cupid' doesn't rap thankfully
O.B. Buchana with 'I'm Jody'.
Another respected southern soul artist, Rue Davis, with this beautiful ballad, 'I Love The Way You Love Me'.
And finally for now, this is Vickie Baker, (with Luster Baker), telling us all what kind of girl she is
Hope there's something among these to like

I wrote somewhere on this forum that i hate lables for good music, but this one, southern, does appear to stand out as i often get the comment "they all sound the same to me" lets hope we can change a few folks minds

Staying with Big G here's a lovely downtempo doozie
Two for the price of one on this excellent track

Wendell is another steadfast issuer of good cd's. Here's one from the "Real talk" set
Here's Wendell featuring on J'Cenae's "I'll be down in a minute" the whole album is good. Sad about the short rap interlude

Staying with the ladies, this is from a backbeat cd from back in the day
Two more from the same set, will be pulling the rest of the backbeat stuff off the shelf its not all southern so it's a case of what's next?
this sounds a little bluesy all the more to love

And here is the man who was in part responsible for Paul starting the thread. Dare I mention that it sounds like R Kelly in places
